SUMMARY:Happy Tea: A wild ride of self-discovery and unexpected lessons.
DESCRIPTION:Happy Tea: A wild ride of self-discovery and unexpected lessons.\n\n\n\nThe Livingston Fringe Festival was created by Tessa Welch and Kate Britton and takes place September 22 – 28\, 2025. Get an all access pass for the amazing line-up of shows happening throughout the week at locations all about town. Wheatgrass Books will host comedian Jennifer Jane for two performances\, Thursday the 25th at 6pm and Saturday the 27th at 3pm.  \n\n\n\nThis candid one woman show brings Jennifer’s journey full circle with her debut comedy hour inspired by her experiences chronicled in the multi-award winning documentary Charged\, which follows the absurd true story of her relationship with a charming serially unfaithful boyfriend\, whose near-fatal freak hiking accident flipped their lives upside down. It’s shocking. It’s painfully funny. And it’s not the story you think it is. Through biting wit and razor-sharp heartfelt storytelling\, Jennifer unpacks the comedy\, tragedy\, and ultimate redemption in a tale so outrageous it can only be true. She delves into what it’s like to become friends with your own nipple hairs\, the unexpected joy of six weeks sleeping in a chair and the room stopping awkwardness when she asks a medical doctor if she can cook her ex-boyfriend’s amputated hand. This is a remarkably honest\, deeply insightful look at being a caregiver\, trying to do the right thing under weird circumstances and the journey to reclaim her life and confidence. Get Tickets Here

SUMMARY:Jim Overstreet
DESCRIPTION:BOOK SIGNING\n\n\n\nJim Overstreet\n\n\n\nWheatgrass Books will host author Jim Overstreet for a book signing during the 4th Friday Art Walk on August 22nd from 5 pm to 8 pm. \n\n\n\nJim Overstreet is a lifelong cowboy and author of A Montana Rivalry. Raising horses for most of his life\, he earned multiple titles in tie down roping\, from youth rodeo to the senior circuit. As an accomplished writer\, his work has been published in national magazines including Reader’s Digest\, Persimmon Hill and numerous equine magazines\, including Western Horseman. The American Horse Publications honored him as a winner in their Feature Article category. \n\n\n\nJim rode horses before he could walk. He grew up on the Sun Ranch\, a large cattle and horse ranch in the Madison Valley in southwest Montana with a father who was an avid horseman and well-respected cowboy in the area. He grew up believing that cowboys were special. His father helped him begin training horses and later he learned from Ray Hunt and Tom Dorrance. \n\n\n\nJim’s adult life was filled with roping and rodeos along with raising two daughters with his wife amongst his many horses in the shadow of Montana’s Crazy Mountains. \n\n\n\nJim loves to write\, except when he hates it\, and although he is old enough to know better\, Jim still rides and trains horses. He is passionate about telling stories of the contemporary West that demonstrate the physical toughness\, mental determination\, and dependence on community inherent to ranching and rodeo. His first book\, A Montana Rivalry\, released by Palmetto Publishing in fall of 2023\, is the first book in the Rodeo in The Blood Series. Since then\, three more have been published: A Montana Inheritance\, A Montana Feud\, and The Canadian Horse.

SUMMARY:Eugene Conlon: A Retrospective
DESCRIPTION:EXHIBIT & ARTIST RECEPTION\n\n\n\nEugene Conlon: A Retrospective\n\n\n\nWheatgrass Books is honored to present Eugene Conlon (1925–2001): A Retrospective\, a special exhibition curated by his daughter and Livingston resident\, Eugenia Kay. A reception for the exhibit will be held during the 4th Friday Art Walk on August 22nd from 5 pm to 8 pm\, inviting the public to experience the work of a prolific American watercolorist whose career spanned over five decades. The show will be on display from August 22nd\, 2025 through September 19th\, 2025. After graduating from the Massachusetts College of Art in 1950\, Eugene Conlon dedicated his life to painting. His work was exhibited in both solo and group shows and represented by distinguished galleries including the Munson Gallery in Chatham\, Massachusetts\, and Santa Fe\, New Mexico. He was a member of the National Academy of Design\, the National Watercolor Society\, and the Boston Watercolor Society. SUMMARY:Commonplace Book Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Commonplace Book Workshop\n\n\n\nPlease join me for this commonplace book workshop! As a lifelong notebook and journal collector\, I have been searching for the perfect journaling method. I’ve tried it all—guided journals\, stream of consciousness\, bullet journals\, scrapbooks\, digital journals\, even Tumblr! None of these methods clicked for me. Instead\, I created a looming stack of nearly empty notebooks that had been “ruined” (or completely empty ones that were too perfect for me to use). Little did I know\, John Locke—yes\, ye old 17th century John Locke\, had solved my problem 400 years ago with the commonplace book. \n\n\n\nWhat is a commonplace book\, you ask? A commonplace book is a way to gather everything in one spot. Thoughts\, ideas\, keepsakes\, journal entries\, lists\, brain dumps\, pressed leaves\, business cards\, that one joke you don’t want to ever forget\, the random sequin you found on the porch that has to be a sign from the universe (yes—I have one of these in my commonplace book)\, the notes you take during the documentary on the microbiome that you don’t have anyplace else to put\, your list of suspects and clues that you know will solve that cold case from 1905. Anything! Everything! With a table of contents\, glossary\, and index\, you’ll never misplace these important items again. \n\n\n\nFor the workshop\, you’ll want to bring a new notebook. All other supplies will be provided\, but you can start gathering items you want to save in your book: thank you notes\, newspaper clippings\, new-to-you vocabulary words\, favorite quotes and poems\, etc. You don’t need to bring any of these items\, but you might get more out of our time together. Not only has this method simplified my life\, but it has given me a safe space to be creative and curious. \n\n\n\nSo\, grab that beautiful notebook that you love but have been too afraid to use\, and let’s get commonplacing!  \n\n\n\n—Natalie Jackman  \n\n\n\nIf you have questions\, feel free to reach out to me beforehand at 406-823-0112.

DESCRIPTION:BOOK SIGNING\n\n\n\nG. A. Osborne\n\n\n\nWheatgrass Books will host bestselling Montana author\, G. A. Osborne\, for a book signing on Saturday\, August 9th from 11 am to 2 pm. \n\n\n\n“As an avid bow hunter and outdoorsman\, I’ve been fortunate to enjoy some of the most breathtaking landscapes that Montana has to offer. From the rugged peaks of the Rocky Mountains to the serene valleys and flowing rivers\, every adventure strengthens my connection to nature and fuels my passion for storytelling. My experiences in the wilderness have not only provided endless inspiration for my books but have also taught me valuable lessons about patience\, perseverance\, and respect. Whether I’m bugling elk in the dense timber or stalking pronghorn antelope in open prairies\, each moment spent in the wild has deepened my appreciation for the outdoors and its untamed beauty. \n\n\n\nMy works of fiction\, like Trapper Creek and Timberline Justice\, reflect thrilling hunts and deep bonds of friendship and family. My characters face not only the challenges posed by nature but also chilling\, unsuspected encounters with the worst in men. \n\n\n\nMy Monster Masher series of children’s books offers an exciting collection of short stories that captivate kids of all ages. These thrilling adventures not only ignite young imaginations but also impart essential life lessons.”

Wright with photographs by Kevin League; contributions from the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes\, Shane Doyle (Apsáalooke)\, Steve Running\, and Todd Wilkinson and maps supervised by Kevin McManigal and Hannah Shafer is published by Oregon State University Press July 1\, 2025. The essential purpose of Saving the Big Sky is to inspire the reader to help conserve even more of Montana\,” write Bruce Bugbee\, Robert Kiesling\, and John Wright in this compelling study of how six million acres of biodiverse land were conserved in Montana over the past fifty years. Indigenous and non-Indigenous knowledge about land stewardship has evolved and since the 1970s tribes\, nonprofit organizations\, land trusts\, and government agencies have conserved land in many creative ways. Beautifully illustrated with more than ninety color photographs and thirty detailed maps\, Saving the Big Sky showcases land conservation achievements across eight regions of the state: the Rocky Mountain Front\, the Blackfoot Valley\, the Greater Yellowstone\, the Missoula Region\, the Helena Region\, Northwest Montana\, the Flathead Indian Reservation\, and the American Prairie. Land protection is shown to work best when large\, intact\, connected landscapes can be conserved\, rather than small\, fragmented\, isolated parcels. Conservationists have found that landowners in Montana more widely accept conservation easements and other voluntary\, financially compensating tools that respect private property rights. The brilliant images and striking before-and-after maps featured here celebrate the ranches\, farms\, wildlife habitats\, and scenic open spaces that are forever safeguarded. In documenting conservation accomplishments and suggesting what more can be done\, Saving the Big Sky invites readers to participate in conserving Montana—or whatever cherished landscape they call home. “Conjured from afar\, the name Montana rings in the mind like a bell\, romantic apotheosis of all that’s wild and fresh about the American West. But those of us who know the state personally understand the enormous effort required to keep Montana the inspirational place it’s been for so long. In Saving the Big Sky\, readers from the far away to the nearby now have a superb volume in hand to teach us all just how to keep Montana magical.” —Dan Flores\, New York Times bestselling author of Coyote America: A Natural and Supernatural History and Wild New World: The Epic Story of Animals and People in America “Montana is robust and precious. Hereabouts we treasure what’s natural and wild. At a time when so many Americans get their notions of the state from a cheesy horse opera titled Yellowstone\, it couldn’t be more important to present certain realities—about what’s worth conserving\, and how best to conserve that—in a tapestry made vivid not by fantasy but by fact. Bugbee\, Kiesling\, and Wright do that superbly (with a bit of crucial help from Shane Doyle) in this deeply informed\, loving book.” —David Quammen\, New York Times bestselling author of The Song of the Dodo: Island Biogeography in an Age of Extinctions About the Authors:Bruce A. Bugbee is a land conservation consultant and foundr of American Public Land Exchange. John B. Wright has completed over one hundred conservation easements in Montana and the Rocky Mountain West and is professor emeritus of geography and environmental studies at New Mexico State University. Robert J. Kiesling is a real estate broker\, conservation consultant\, and former executive director of the Montana Environmental Information Center and the Big Sky (Montana/Wyoming) office of The Nature Conservancy.

SUMMARY:Andy Austin
DESCRIPTION:BOOK SIGNING\n\n\n\nAndy Austin\n\n\n\nJoin us on Saturday\, July 5th\, from 11 am to 2 pm for a book signing with Bozeman author and acclaimed photographer Andy Austin.  \n\n\n\nWheatgrass Books is thrilled to welcome author and acclaimed adventure photographer Andy Austin for a Saturday Signing. Andy will be at Wheatgrass from 11 am to 2 pm with his newly released book\, MONTANA: Photographs from the Last Best Place\, a 288-page\, 12-by-12-inch hardcover collection capturing the stunning diversity of Big Sky Country. “This book isn’t just about showing off scenic places\, it’s about sharing the soul of Montana\,” said Austin. “Every photo carries a story\, a memory\, or a moment that shaped how I see this place.” Designed as a large-format 12″x12″ hardcover\, MONTANA: Photographs from the Last Best Place is organized by region and showcases all six official tourism regions of Montana. The book depicts the state’s diverse landscapes\, from the badlands and sweeping prairies in the east to the towering mountains west of the Continental Divide\, as well as historic mining towns and ranchlands of the southwest and the rugged river breaks of central Montana. While iconic places like Glacier and Yellowstone national parks are included\, the book’s heart lies in showcasing that Montana is so much more than just our national parks — it’s also the backroads\, small towns\, tribal nations\, and wild spaces that don’t always make the postcards. Austin comes by his love for Montana’s wild places and vast spaces naturally\, as he was raised in Billings\, Montana. He earned his college degree from Montana State University in Bozeman\, where he also played football for the MSU Bobcats. After graduating\, he traded his helmet for a camera and has traveled extensively to all 56 counties in Montana\, documenting everything from remote wilderness landscapes to the cultural richness of local powwows\, small-town rodeos and tight-knit communities. His work reflects a deep respect for the land and the people who call it home. With a social media following of over 300\,000 and a reputation for authentic storytelling\, Austin’s work has been featured by top travel brands\, tourism boards and outdoor publications around the globe. This book marks his first published collection.  Learn more about Austin at andyaustinphoto.com.

SUMMARY:The Subversive Stitch...threading the needle
DESCRIPTION:EXHIBIT & ARTIST RECEPTION\n\n\n\nThe Subversive Stitch…threading the needle\n\n\n\nWheatgrass Books will host six artists for the first Art Walk of the Summer 2025 Season with an opening reception June 27th from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm. The Subversive Stitch is curated by local artist Traci Jo Isaly. \n\n\n\n“Historically\, humans have found ways of communicating through the mastery of self-expression.  That which cannot be articulated in words\, is oftentimes demonstrated by creating with the hands. Anything we create with our hands; a painting\, wooden objects\, clay objects\, woven baskets\, woven anything\, forged objects…the list goes on and on\, is a form of self-expression. Working with fiber and thread is no exception. Creating from bits of cloth and fibers\, sewn or woven together in a cohesive manner\, can lead to some of the most brilliant works of art ever created. Needles made from bone and ivory have been discovered in primitive archeological sites around the globe. Humans have been stitching/weaving since time immortal.  As an artist\, when threads dance with a needle\, you never know for certain where the dance will take you.  \n\n\n\nThe Subversive Stitch brings together 6 talented artists; everyday people\, who are carving out a creative life\, living the best life\, with thread and needle in hand. \n\n\n\nI got the idea for the title of this show from a book called\, The Subversive Stitch\, by Roszika Parker\, published in 1984. I love her book\, and her work\, which led me to Cecelia Andersson. I love her writing and pieces too.” – Traci Jo Isaly\, Curator \n\n\n\n“Throughout history\, intricate weaves have pushed humanity forward by acting as a powerful means for artistic\, personal\, political\, and everyday stories as well as subversive reflections on society at large. What artists have always known intuitively\, psychologists are now recognizing: we think with our hands as much as with our brains”.  – Cecilia Andersson – The Powerful Agency of Threads \n\n\n\nThe Artists:Traci Jo Isaly – Bozeman Pass\, Montana – mixed media fiber art – soft formed figures\, wall pieces and small intricate novelty pieces \n\n\n\nCindy Owings – McAllister\, Montana – Fiber artist- mixed media works  \n\n\n\n Elli Hawks – Mellville\, Montana – Samplers – artful beading on felt \n\n\n\nAmanda Nadig – Chicago\, Illinois – Large contemporary quilts \n\n\n\nJessi Konley – Livingston\, Montana – Fiber art\, weaver\, rugs and wall hangings \n\n\n\nJay Manford – Livingston\, Montana – Flower grower extraordinaire and quilt artist

SUMMARY:Cassidy Randall
DESCRIPTION:BOOK SIGNING\n\n\n\nCassidy Randall\n\n\n\nWheatgrass Books is excited to welcome award-winning writer Cassidy Randall to the bookstore to celebrate the recent release of her book Thirty Below: The Harrowing and Heroic Story of the First All-Women’s Ascent of Denali\, during the June Art Walk on Friday\, June 27th from 5 pm to 8 pm. As seen in Vanity Fair\, Rolling Stone\, Men’s Journal\, and Outside\, and named one of the most noteworthy books of the month by the Washington Post\, this is the gripping story of a group of adventurers and their treacherous pioneering ascent of Denali. Cassidy Randall draws on extensive archival research and original interviews to tell an engrossing\, edge-of-the-seat adventure story about a forgotten group of climbers who had the audacity to believe that women could walk alone in extraordinary and treacherous heights. Grace Hoeman dreamed of standing on top of Denali. The tallest peak in North America\, the fierce polar mountain loomed large in many climbers’ imaginations\, and Grace\, a doctor in Alaska\, had come close to the top\, only to be turned back by altitude sickness and a storm that took the lives of seven fellow climbers in one remorseless blow. Other expeditions denied her a place because of her gender\, and when a letter arrived from a climber in California named Arlene Blum\, who’d also been barred from expeditions—unless she stayed in base camp and cooked for the men\, Grace got a defiant idea: she would organize and lead the first-ever all-female ascent of the frozen Alaskan peak. Everyone told the “Denali Damsels\,” as the team called themselves\, that it couldn’t be done. Women were incapable of climbing mountains on their own. Men had walked on the moon; women still had not stood on the highest points on Earth. But these six women were unwilling to be limited by sexists and misogynists. They pushed past barriers in society at large\, the climbing world\, and their own bodies. And then\, when disaster struck at the worst time on their expedition\, they could either keep their wits and prove their mettle or die and confirm the worst opinions of men. About Cassidy RandallCassidy Randall is an award-winning writer who tells stories on the environment\, adventure\, and people who expand human potential. Her stories have appeared in Rolling Stone\, National Geographic\, the New York Times\, TIME\, Atavist\, Outside\, and Men’s Journal\, among others. She wrote The Hard Parts with Paralympian Oksana Masters\, which won an Alex Award from the American Library Association and was listed as one of the best sports books of the year by the Times. Her work has been awarded the Lowell Thomas Gold Medal in Adventure Writing\, short-listed for the True Story Award\, and included in The Year’s Best Sports Writing. She lives in Montana.

SUMMARY:Clem C. Pellet
DESCRIPTION:BOOK SIGNING\n\n\n\nClem C. Pellet\n\n\n\nJoin us Saturday\, June 7th from 11 am to 2 pm for an author event with Clem C. Pellet\, author of Murder on Montana’s Hi-Line. \n\n\n\nAbout the BookDuring an intense spring blizzard in 1951\, affable Clarence Pellett picked up a teenaged hitchhiker along Montana’s Hi-Line. Soon\, blood from seven bullet holes in Pellett’s back stained the snow-covered prairie. Following a brief manhunt and confession\, a heated debate ensued over capital punishment as Communist attorneys swooped in “to save this poor friendless boy.”Frank Dryman\, twice sentenced to hang\, escaped the noose when a sympathetic Montana Supreme Court stayed each execution. The “permanently insane and mentally deficient” killer was paroled into the custody of his brother in California after serving thirteen years of a life sentence. Eighteen months later\, he vanished. Using a series of aliases\, Dryman hid in plain sight for forty years despite state and federal warrants. Clem Pellett recounts the enthralling twists and turns of his hunt for his grandfather’s absconded murderer—the longest in state history. Currently\, Dr. Pellett is part of the production team for the movie Pellett\, based on this true story. The producers of Pellet hope their film will tap into the strength of the story of a central Montana murder that happened 67 years ago\, and the decades long quest to return the killer to justice. “It’s going to be a Montana story that’s told in Montana and with Montana help and resources\,” said Clem Pellett\, grandson of Clarence Pellett\, who died at the hand of Frank Dryman seven decades ago. “It’s also about the McCarthy era\, communism and how it was treated. It’s about the death penalty. It’s about the argument on both sides even from the 1950s perspective. You’re going to really step into that era. We’re going to put together that mindset on the decisions made back then\, based upon what the culture and the situation at the time.” Of the book and the movie\, Clem Pellet says: “I’m so excited to finally have the family story told. Fifteen years in the making\, doing the research – – combing through FBI files\, interviewing primary witnesses\, collecting documents\, letters\, transcripts etc.\, it’s very satisfying. “The movie has been a long eight years in production. We had to get through Covid\, historical Hollywood strikes\, and compete with other states for movie tax credit. The production team was totally dedicated to filming this in Montana and to make it an authentic Montana story. The team is so dedicated to authenticity\, we use the actual murder weapon as a prop in the movie. The film is due to come out sometime this fall.  “My book and the movie are completely complementary\, which is to say the movie is the main course. The book can be an appetizer or a dessert\, but between the two you’ll get a total story of the true Montana Saga.” About the AuthorMontana native Dr. Clem C. Pellett received his undergraduate degree from Montana State University in Bozeman and a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Creighton University in Omaha and completed his residency at the Mayo Clinic’s Graduate School of Medicine in Rochester\, Minnesota. After nearly three decades\, he changed careers. Inspired by his successful quest tracking down the murderer of his grandfather\, he earned a certificate of private investigation from Boston University.

SUMMARY:Mike Riley
DESCRIPTION:BOOK SIGNING\n\n\n\nMike Riley\n\n\n\nWheatgrass will host author Mike Riley for a Saturday Signing on Saturday\, March 22nd from 11 am to 2 pm. \n\n\n\nIn a time when things seem to be falling apart everywhere\, this story of restoration is a gift: stunning in its prose\, surprising in its turns\, and reassuring in its affirmation of the human spirit. Many of the great themes of the American West are at play here — man against the wild\, man against man\, and man against himself; killing and nurture\, numbness and vulnerability\, isolation and connection. I was stunned time and again by Riley’s tender exploration of what it takes to heal both heart and hearth.— Teresa Jordan\, Buddhist chaplain and author of Riding the White Horse Home When Michael Riley bought a 1917 farmhouse on the Yellowstone River fifteen miles from where he grew up\, he had no idea what he was getting into. Much of what was in store for him wasn’t exactly “a delight\,” including the presence of an enormous bat colony and decades of guano. But luckily for readers\, his memoir that chronicles reclaiming the house\, evicting the bats\, and contemplating the life that had led him to this post-retirement purchase is absolutely a delight. While he deftly uses his bat nemesis as a central axis to this moving memoir\, the book is a love story about a forty-plus year marriage to a remarkable woman\, about decades of teaching inspiring (and challenging) students\, about rivers and mountains and dogs and poker\, about sobriety and acceptance\, and yes\, even about a love affair—of sorts—with bats. The Bat House\, A Montana Memoir centers on Riley’s renovation of a 1917 farmhouse which he discovered was the maternal roosting space for little brown bats. Fifteen miles from where Riley was raised along the Yellowstone River in Montana\, the two-story brick house is an icon in the county. Built by oil drillers where only a buffalo hunter’s cabin had been\, it stood as a mansion close to the Milwaukee Railroad and a few hundred yards from the river. The memoir charts its changing environment as well as the author’s journey from loathing bats\, fearing them\, and wanting to eradicate them\, to accepting and honoring them. Four narrative threads weave through the memoir’s fifteen years in a vignette like structure: the challenging life of renovation\, a professional life 200 miles away in Wyoming\, family life\, and memories of growing up in eastern Montana. The book reveals the emotional trials of dealing with financial stress\, his wife’s cancer diagnosis\, drought and flood\, resolving an addictive past\, and the loss of venerable history. Revelation arrives through learning the crucial role of bats in our ecosystem and the unexpected benefits of practicing yoga.About the Author:Mike Riley grew up along the Yellowstone River in eastern Montana. He taught English and Journalism at Montana State Prison\, Cody High School\, the Texas School for the Deaf\, Blackfeet Community College\, on Kwajalein in the Marshall Islands\, the University of Montana\, and Northwest College\, and received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Journalism Education Association before retiring in Cody\, Wyoming. He has an MFA in fiction writing from the University of Montana where he won the TransAtlantic Henfield Award for short fiction and fellowships from the Montana Arts Council and the Wyoming Arts Council\, serving as writer in residence for both. He is at work on collections of essays and poetry\, as well as a historical novel set in first century Rome.Riley’s generous and elegant memoir of marriage and house-holding is ceaselessly instructive and unflinchingly celebratory of both. Read it. Then give it to someone you love.— Richard FordWritten in sharp\, smart\, precise prose that is charming and genuineeven in the moments when Riley is gruff\, skeptical\, or philosophical\, he proves exactly the sort of friend you wish you deserved\, the teacher you wish you had\, and the writer who you wish could accompany you everywhere. The Bat House swoops and dives with grace through beauty\, despair\, and wonder\, and readers will find themselves as plagued by the changing world and their place in it just as Riley is plagued by bats and lifted by memories.— Mark Hummel\, author of Man\, Underground

SUMMARY:Brittnay Sears
DESCRIPTION:BOOK SIGNING\n\n\n\nBrittnay Sears\n\n\n\nWheatgrass will host Billings author Brittnay Sears for a Saturday Signing February 15th from 11 am – 2 pm. \n\n\n\nThe Left Hand\, the debut novel by author Brittnay Sears\, is a romance thriller based on the author’s grandparents. Set in Billings Montana in 1948 during the start of the Jazz Club Era\, it follows her grandfather’s progression in the mafia. The main character\, the author’s grandmother\, assists her husband’s path up the ranks\, essentially doing the dirty work from behind the scenes. The title\, The Left Hand\, is a reference to their marriage and the fact that Jan\, the grandmother\, can never visibly be her husband’s “right hand man”. \n\n\n\nBRITTNAY SEARS was raised by her great grandparents\, Lavio and Jan\, who instilled a passion for reading in her at a young age\, and who she hopes would have been very proud to see where that passion has taken her in life. She currently lives in Montana with her husband and four sons.
