SUMMARY:Ryan Devereaux
DESCRIPTION:READING\n\n\n\nRyan Devereaux\n\n\n\nWheatgrass Books Welcomes Journalist Ryan Devereaux for a Conversation on Yellowstone’s Wolves and the Politics of the American West \n\n\n\nThursday\, November 12\, 2026\, at 6 p.m. | Wheatgrass Books\, Livingston\, Montana \n\n\n\nWheatgrass Books will welcome award-winning investigative journalist Ryan Devereaux on Thursday\, November 12\, at 6 p.m. for a conversation about his new book\, The Hunt: A True Story of Resurrection and Retribution in the West. Devereaux will be joined by three Montana voices working at the intersection of wildlife conservation\, ranching\, and community relationships: Lill Erickson\, founder of Western Sustainability Exchange; Marc Cooke\, president of Wolves of the Rockies; and Malou Anderson\, cofounder of the Tom Miner Basin Association. \n\n\n\nSet against the backdrop of Yellowstone National Park and the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem\, the discussion will explore one of the American West’s most contentious issues: how to navigate the complex relationships among wolves\, people\, public lands\, and the future of rural communities. \n\n\n\nIn The Hunt\, Devereaux takes readers into the tumultuous world surrounding Yellowstone’s iconic wolves\, examining a season of wolf hunting and its far-reaching implications for wildlife\, conservation\, and Western identity. Through meticulous investigative reporting\, he traces the relationships between politics\, power\, and the natural world\, revealing how one of the region’s most divisive wildlife issues has become a flashpoint in the broader American culture wars. \n\n\n\nThe book offers a deeply reported account of the competing values and passions surrounding wolves\, asking difficult questions about wildlife management\, the role of government\, and what it means to share a landscape with wild animals. Both a gripping narrative and an examination of political polarization\, The Hunt illuminates the challenges of finding common ground in a region where wildlife conservation and rural livelihoods are often portrayed as opposing interests. \n\n\n\nDevereaux is an award-winning journalist and Type Media Center fellow based in Tucson\, Arizona\, where he covers the intersections of politics\, power\, and justice in the American West. From 2013 to 2024\, he served as a senior investigative reporter at The Intercept\, covering conservation and the environment\, immigration and the border\, the War on Terror\, and the drug war in Mexico. His reporting has received numerous honors\, including an Edward R. Murrow Award\, the Deadline Club’s top prize for feature reporting\, and an Online Journalism Award for best feature writing for a small newsroom. \n\n\n\nDevereaux will be joined by three panelists whose work brings distinct perspectives and extensive experience to the conversation. \n\n\n\nLill Erickson founded Western Sustainability Exchange in 1994 to protect Montana’s open spaces\, wildlife\, and ranching heritage by helping conservation and rural livelihoods coexist. For more than 30 years\, she has worked with ranchers\, conservationists\, businesses\, and rural communities to develop practical\, collaborative approaches to land stewardship. Her work increasingly focuses on wildlife coexistence\, sound science\, and broader public participation in wildlife management. Erickson brings a perspective grounded in conservation\, community relationships\, and the conviction that people and wildlife can both thrive on the landscape. \n\n\n\nMarc Cooke\, president of Wolves of the Rockies\, is a U.S. military veteran who served during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. He and his wife\, Lorenza\, have called Montana home for more than 20 years. His commitment to protecting Rocky Mountain wolves has grown into a full-time volunteer effort\, including work that helped reduce wolf quotas around Yellowstone National Park. Cooke has also participated in collaborative efforts addressing Montana’s wolf management issues\, serving on the Montana Wolf Advisory Committee\, Finding Common Ground\, Montana Fish\, Wildlife & Parks’ Region 2 Citizen Advisory Committee\, and the Ravalli County Collaborative. His experience combines wolf advocacy with firsthand engagement in the challenging work of finding solutions across differing viewpoints. \n\n\n\nMalou Anderson grew up on her family’s working ranch in southwestern Montana. After earning a degree in psychology in 2007\, she pursued training in equine-assisted therapeutic programs and worked in behavioral sciences in California and Texas before returning to the family ranch\, where she and her husband\, Dre\, have lived for more than a decade. Today\, Anderson tends to the land and animals while raising her daughters\, with a particular focus on coexistence education involving grizzly bears\, wolves\, cattle\, and people.coexistence education involving grizzly bears\, wolves\, cattle\, and people. A lifelong horsewoman\, she brings a deeply personal connection to the landscape and a commitment to the listening\, care\, and collaboration necessary for people and wildlife to coexist. \n\n\n\nTogether\, Devereaux and the three panelists will consider the ecological\, social\, and political dimensions of wolf management in the Greater Yellowstone region. The conversation will invite audiences to look beyond polarized headlines and examine the real-world challenges of wildlife policy\, the experiences of people living alongside wild animals\, and the possibilities for collaboration among ranchers\, conservationists\, advocates\, and rural communities. \n\n\n\nAdvance praise for The Hunt underscores the book’s relevance beyond the story of Yellowstone’s wolves. Nate Blakeslee\, bestselling author of American Wolf\, calls it “an indispensable resource” for understanding wildlife management in an age of political polarization. Author and environmental activist Bill McKibben praises Devereaux’s detailed reporting and measured examination of the human forces shaping the fate of wild animals. \n\n\n\nThe November 12 event offers Livingston-area readers and community members an opportunity to engage directly with the author and three people whose work brings these questions into focus in Montana. At a time when wildlife management can divide communities\, this conversation will explore the tensions\, shared concerns\, and possibilities for coexistence that shape the future of the American West. \n\n\n\nThe event is free and open to the public. \n\n\n\nEVENT DETAILS \n\n\n\nWhat: Ryan Devereaux in Conversation with Lill Erickson\, Marc Cooke\, and Malou AndersonWhen: Thursday\, November 12\, 2026\, at 6 p.m.Where: Wheatgrass Books\, 120 N.
